Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry to enter centenary year

Panaji, Aug 28 (UNI) The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) will complete 99 years of its existence and will enter its centenary year on September 3.

The GCCI has planned several activities throughout the year to commemorate the centenary year. Among the host of activities, the GCCI plans to release a commercial history of Goa, a trade and commercial directory, and a history of the Chamber.

The GCCI has undertaken construction of a new building at Verna in South Goa which is nearing completion. A number of symposia will also be organised during the year, while the business contributions of Goans abroad will also be highlighted.

Speaking to media persons here today, GCCI President Nitin Kunkolienkar informed that the Chamber was established in 1908 and was initially known as ''Associacao Commercial da India Portuguesa''.

The Chamber has played an important role in the development of the state, Mr Kunkolienkar said, adding that the GCCI is the fourth oldest chamber in the country after the Bombay, Madras and Cochin chambers.

He said the GCCI, during the last five years, has made several proposals to the government with respect to the industrial policy, and IT policy, among others.

The inaugural function of the centenary celebrations will be held on September 1 which will be presided over by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat while ICICI Bank CEO K V Kamath will be the chief guest.
