3-day national conference on climate change in Goa from tomorrow

Panaji, Aug 28 (UNI) The three-day 8th National Conference on Environment Management with the theme ''Climate Change -- Issues and Concerns'' will be held here beginning tomorrow.

The event is being organised by Greentech Foundation, a Delhi-based organisation, in association with Reliance Energy, ONGC, Balco, Zindal Stainless, Star Paper Mills, Essar, SRF and others.

Greentech president Kamleshwar Sharan, speaking to mediapersons here today, said around 250 delegates from corporate houses, public sector undertakings, government bodies, NGOs and others will participate in the event.

The meet will deliberate on issues concerning climate change, sustainable development, climate change impacts for India, climate change and Indian forestry and agriculture sectors, and such others.

Mr Sharan said climate change is likely to trigger ''Risk of Hunger'' in India by affecting cereal production by as much as 18 per cent because of floods and droughts as per an UN agency warning.

Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has setimated that India could lose as much as 125 million tonnes of its rainfed cereal production.

Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat will inaugurate the meet and also give away awards for excellence in environment protection to various organizations.
