Two tehsildars arrested for stamp duty evasion

Moga, Aug 27 (UNI) Two tehsildar of Baghapurana area were arrested on charges of evasion of stamp duty worth Rs 11.60 lakh.

Giving details here today, police official said that an enquiry conducted by SDM Nihal Singh, Baghapurana tehsildar Manjit Singh, now posted at Mohali, and naib tehsildar Jaspal Singh Brar, were found involved in embezzlement of about Rs 11.60 lakh in the form of evasion of stamp duty.

Police said that on last Friday eight to ten persons made a complaint to the SDM that naib tehsildar Jaspal Brar was not returning the registered documents and demanding a bribe in lieu of signing the documents. The SDM rushed to Baghapurana and took possession of the unsigned registration documents.

However, the naib tehsildar snatched these documents from the SDM and escaped with 32 unsigned registration deeds. He later returned the registered documents after signing these.

In the meantime the SDM conducted an enquiry of the last three months registration work done at Baghapurana registration office and found embezzlement of at least Rs 11.60 lakh in the form of evasion of stamp duty.

The SDM reported the whole matter to the deputy commissioner, commissioner of Ferozepur division and financial commissioner revenue at Chandigarh.
