Hisar, Aug 27 (UNI) Sugarcane and sorghum crops are under attack of pyrilla and grasshopper in Haryana.

A group of scientists of Haryana Agricultural University visited Bawal, Nuh, Sohna and Palwal areas of the state and observed heavy attack of pyrilla and grasshopper on sugarcane and sorghum crops.

According to HAU Director of Research Dr B S Chhillar, normally the egg, nymph and adult parasitoids of pyrilla are available naturally in the field, which automatically take care of the pest.

But, sometimes the population of the naturally available parasitoids is low and this results in heavy multiplication of the pest, Mr Chhillar said.

The parasitoids of pyrilla are available at the Cooperative Sugar Mill, Sonipat. He advised farmers to procure these parasitoids from the sugar mill and release them in field.

"The release of parasitoids will take care of the pests at its own.

if some how, the release of parasitoids is not possible, this pest can also be controlled by spraying 400 to 600 ml malathion 50 EC or endosulfan 35 EC or fenitrothion 50 EC in 400 to 600 ltrs of water per acre.

Regarding its control measure, Dr Chhillar said that Grasshopper control in sugarcane can be achieved by spraying with 400 ml monocrotophos 36 SL or 800 ml malathion 50 EC or 1200 gm carbaryl 50 WP by mixing in 400 ltrs of water per acre.

Apart from spraying, this pest can also be controlled by dusting the crop with 10 kg dust of methyl parathion 2 D or lindane 1.3 D per acre. Dusting should be done with the help of dusting machine only, otherwise good control will not be achieved and it may also result in burning of the leaves due to falling of excessive dust particles on them, Mr Chhillar said.
