Punjab to implement Knowledge Commission recommendations

Chandigarh, Aug 27 (UNI) The Punjab government would implement the recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) to strengthen the educational system, promote research and innovation and knowledge applications in sectors like health, agriculture and industry.

This assurance was given by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to the three-member NKC team led by its Advisor S Regunathan.

The team met the Chief Minister here today to apprise him of the recommendations of the Commission and their implementation to create a knowledge base in the state.

Mr Regunathan informed Mr Badal that NKC was set up in 2005 as a high-level advisory body to the Prime Minister of India headed by Dr Sam Pitroda with the objective of transforming India into a knowledge society.

Mr Badal also assured Mr Regunathan that his government would work in tandem with Commission in focus areas of literacy, education, higher education, technical education, medical education, vocational education, libraries, science and technology, innovations, intellectual property rights and language and portals.

Mr Badal assured the visiting team that the state government would extend fulsome support and cooperation to the Commission for translating its recommendations into reality.

Later Mr Regunathan alongwith two research associates of NKC, Ms Aditi Saraf and Ms Kanan Dhru held a detailed meeting with a group of officers led by Chief Secretary R I Singh to share their vision and perspective on an action plan for Punjab in select areas such as e-governance, translation, libraries, higher education and vocational education.
