With this the total number of AIDS patients in the state has went upto 27 while those infected with HIV were 78, according to latest figures provided by Sikkim State AIDS Control Society (SSACS).

Unprotected sex was the main cause for the proliferation of the dreaded disease in the state, SSACS said.

The affected ones were being provided free anti-retroviral drugs at a treatment centre run by SSACS here.

Maximum prevalence of the disease falls in the age group of 20-39, officials said.

According the National AIDS Control Society guidelines, the state unit had demarcated zones regarding the prevalence of the cases.

East Sikkim, which is the most populated district having a sizeable migrant population has been listed as 'A' category. South and West districts are in 'C' category while North Sikkim has no reports of HIV and AIDS till now.
