Tripura demands reconstitution of Brahmaputra Board
Agartala, Aug 26 (UNI) The Tripura government has expressed dissatisfaction over the activities of the Brahmaputra Board and demanded its immediate reconstitution.
Talking to mediapersons here today, state Water Resources Minister Badal Choudhary said he had taken up the issue of poor performance of the board in the state with Union Water Resource Minister Saifuddin Soz during his recent visit to New Delhi.
''Since inception of the board in 1983, it has not accomplished any project in the state despite being constituted for facilitating water resource management programmes in all Northeastern states,'' Mr Choudhury pointed out.
He also demanded infrastructural development of the board and impact of its activities at ground level besides setting up offices with adequate employees at sub-divisional level.
Mr Choudhary urged Mr Soz to release Rs 92 crore, recommended by the task forces and constituted for NE states three years ago, following a devastating flood in Assam.
''The task force recommended Rs 92 crore as emergency fund for Tripura during the 10th Finance Commission and Rs 540 crore under long-term planning on water resource development. Unfortunately, only Rs 12 crore has been released so far,'' Mr Choudhury added.
