Tension grips Assam; police questions Bangladeshis

Guwahati, Aug 26 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the Doomdooma township of Upper Assam for the second day today following yesterday's incident in which a house was set on fire.

Police began verification of credentials of 31 Bangladeshis handed over to them by activists in correction with the incident.

Based on inputs from local people, activists of AASU, AJYCP and other civil societies launched a campaign in the Shankardevnagar area of the town in Tinsukia district and handed over the migrants to the police.

Unidentified men had set ablaze a house in the area yesterday, triggering tension in the town.

Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) submitted a memorandum to the Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner to take measures to detect and deport the suspected immigrants who had entered and settled in the district.
