RJD seeks guaranteed safety for Hindi-speaking people in Assam

Sarnath, Varanasi, Aug 26 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad-led RJD concluded its two-day sixth national convention here today unanimously demanding security and safety for Hindi-speaking population presently on the target of separatist groups in Assam.

Addressing the open session of the convention, RJD supremo Mr Prasad said ''we unanimously condemn the killing of Hindi speaking people at the hands of ULFA and KLNLF in Assam and demand from the UPA government guarenteed safety and security for this minority population, which migrated from UP and Bihar to the North Eastern state 200 years ago.'' ''The RJD resolves that attack on Hindi speaking population, which is of immense importance to prosperity of Assam will result in disintegration of the country,'' Mr Prasad said.

''I have talked to Assam CM, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, besides UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and conveyed our resentment over the improper handling of situation by state government,'' Mr Prasad maintain.

At its convention, the RJD president also gave a call for creation of a separate 'Purvanchal' out of East UP, besides appealing party workers to work for rising to power across the country.

''Desh par kabze karein isee naare se adhiveshan ka samapan kar raha hoon,'' he said.

Earlier at the convention, RJD, the key constituent of ruling UPA coalition endorsed the 123 Indo-US nuke pact saying the treaty would enable the country to fulfil its energy needs.

The RJD resolution on foreign policy demanded withdrawal of the US-led allied forces from Iraq and reconstruction of the war-torn nation under UN-supervision.

The resolution also expressed concern at the political instability in Pakistan and Bangladesh and hoped the political crisis in the two neighbouring countries would be resolved soon.

The RJD also urged the government to take steps for strengthening relations with neighbours, especially China.
