Punjab police to verify detainees in Dubai, UAE jails

Hoshiarpur, Aug 26 (UNI) In order to ascertain the identification of those residents of Punjab who have been languishing in prisons in UAE and Dubai, the state police has started verifying their antecedents.

These people are among those who were arrested as they had either lost their passports or they did not possess the relevant travel documents.

According to police sources here today, verification of 63 people from Hoshiarpur district was being done and details would be sent to the concerned authorities within a day. The number of such persons are more than 400 in the state and the entire process would be completed within two days, they said.

Details of the verifications reports would be sent to the Indian embassies in UAE and Dubai so as to seek the release of all those who have been languishing in prisons in the two countries for not possessing valid passports or documents.

A majority of those behind bars are those who had gone for earning a livelihood. But their employers, soon after providing them jobs, had taken away their passports and other relevant documents that could have established their identity. They were not even paid their full monthly salaries, the sources added.

The governments of these two countries had sought verification of all such people (of all countries) so that they can be deported back. A list of such people had been sent to the Union Home Ministry by the Indian embassies in the two countries.

Police sources said that recently five people from Hoshiarpur district were deported to India after their verification reports were sent from here.
