Women to vote to decide fate of liquor shop
Nagpur, Aug 25 (UNI) Women voters in a ward will vote to decide the fate of a liquor shop in the locality in the first such poll in the city tomorrow.
The voting will take place in ward number 123 (Rameshwari) on the orders of the district collector after women from the area complained against the functioning of the shop in the area, according to Uma Pimpalkar, who is leading the agitation on the issue.
Interestingly, the shop is operated from space rented in a building owned by a former mayor.
Meanwhile, the High Court here has stayed the counting of the votes, but has allowed the actual polling to take place after the owner of the shop filed a petition against the process.
As per an order of the state government, a liquor shop has to be closed down if more than 50 per cent of the women voters favour the move. The poll is held through secret ballot.
