Chennai, Aug 25 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa today claimed that the ruling DMK's move to venture into Cable TV business was to ''settle scores'' with the Maran family-owned Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV), which was enjoying monopoly in the State.

In a statement here, she disagreed with DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's claim that the State Government was venturing into the Cable TV business only to make more revenue for the Government and wanted to know why he had opposed the Cable TV Regulation Bill brought in by her previous regime.

Ms Jayalalithaa recalled that her Government had introduced the Cable TV Regulation Bill in January 2006, with a view to prevent the monopoly of SCV, a Multisystem Operator involved in the distribution of Cable TV services. After the Conditional Access System (CAS) was implemented in 2003, people were given an opportunity to watch free-to-air channels for a monthly subscription of Rs 90 as against Rs 200 charged by the SCV. The Bill was introduced to prevent people from being exploited by the SCV, she added.

However, Mr Karunanidhi, instead of taking part in the debate in the Assembly on the issue then, had chosen to call on the Governor with the then Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran and urged him not to give assent to the Bill, she alleged.

In the wake of strained relations with the Maran family, Mr Karunanidhi was now evincing interest in venturing into the Cable TV business, she said, demanding that the DMK Government reintroduce the Cable TV Regulation Bill, passed during the previous AIADMK regime.
