Militant responsible for grenade attack on NC president arrested

Srinagar, Aug 24 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have arrested a militant who dodged a grenade attack on National Conference (NC) president Omar Abdullah in north Kashmir on July 9, 2007.

Mr Abdullah escaped unhurt in the attack in which 24 people, including two police and two CRPF personnel were injured.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Haseeb Drabu said during the course of investigation, 12 suspected persons were questioned in Kralgund Police Station.

During the interrogation it surfaced that one released militant Ashiq Hussain Bhat was seen roaming in Supernaghama in suspicious conditions on the said date.

Bhat, during today's questioning admitted that he hurled a hand grenade on Mr Abdullah after his public meeting.

He said he was an over-ground worker of Al-Badr outfit and two grenades were given to him by one Abu Tulha and Abu Abdullah of Al-Bader at Badbugh, a day before Mr Abdullah's public meeting.

Another grenade has been recovered on his confession from his house.
