Govt committed to protecting minorities : Dasmunsi
New Delhi, Aug 24 (UNI) Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said today that the government would not leave any stone unturned in the matter of protecting the minorities and their interests.
Replying to a special mention made by CPI(M) member Hannan Mollah on the delay in the implementation of the Justice Srikrishna Commission report into the 1993 Mumbai violene in which 1,000 people were killed, he said UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was seriously and sincerely concerned over the issue.
He said the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had told the media, in his presence in Mumbai, that a portion of the recommendations of the Srikrishna Commission had already been implemented and the remaining portions were being pursued.
Raising the issue, Mr Mollah said the commission report had not been implemented despite the fact that it was submitted nine years ago.
He said the commission had made several meaningful suggestions which had to be implemented to improve the confidence of the minorities in our system.
In this context, he alleged that the Maharashtra government had promoted 31 police personnel who were identified by the commission as criminals.
"These actions will send a wrong signal to the minorities who could not be faulted if they believe that they would not get justice," Mr Mollah said.
