Formal probe ordered against SHO for torture of a youth

Hoshiarpur, Aug 24 (UNI) Police today ordered formal departmental inquiry against the then Station House Officer Inspector Parveen Kumar Kanda into the torture case of a youth here by the CIA staff on the night of August 22.

SSP Anita Punj today ordered the formal inquiry after receiving a report from the DSP (H), against the then Station House Officer Inspector Parveen Kumar Kanda, who was recently transferred from the City police station in another case.

Talking to UNI, Ms Anita Punj said that the preliminary inquiry conducted by the DSP (H) revealed that the then SHO Parveen Kumar Kanda was responsible for inhuman torture of a young man Ravinder Kumar who was now under treatment in the local Civil Hospital.

The officer of the rank of SP would conduct the department inquiry against the Inspector, she added.

Ravinder Kumar, a saleman along with three other employees, was rounded up by the police in connection with the investigation of a theft of Rs 58000 cash from the showroom in which they were working.

While the other three were released after preliminary inquiry, Ravinder Kumar who had been detained for questioning, was severely tortured during interrogation by the police, it was alleged.

Even electric shocks on his private parts of the body were given by the police. Later, on realising his critical condition the police left him before the showroom in the night.

Ravinder Kumar fell unconscious on the road while trying to reach his house and was taken to local Civil Hospital under critical condition.

Members of his family met the SSP Anita Punj and apprised her of the matter. Taking serious note of the allegations, she had deputed DSP (H) to inquire intro the matter and submit his report.
