Court gives five days police custody to HNLC family members

Shillong, Aug 24 (UNI) A local court in Meghalaya today remanded three arrested family members of Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council's two top militant leaders to five days police custody.

Yesterday, police arrested HNLC general secretary Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew's sister Graceful Thangkhiew and 'Commander-in-Chief' Bobby Marwein's mother T Marwein and wife C Dkhar for their alleged involvement in extortion racket.

East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police A R Mawthoh said the trio were arrested on the basis of a confession made by five arrested HNLC couriers, who had alleged that the trio used to help the proscribed outfit in sending extortion funds to the two leaders in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, arrested Achik National Volunteers' Council militant leader organising secretary Bernard Marak under Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act on charges of extortion.

Marak alias Torik Jangang, arrested on August 17 last from the ANVC's liaison office in Tura after truckers lodged complaints with the police against the militant leader.
