Congress, independent bag one seat each in MC re-polls

Amrtisar, Aug 24 (UNI) Navdeep Singh Goldy of Congress and independent candidate Kailash Kaur defeated their nearest Akali rivals in the two Municipal Council wards in which results were declared today for the repolling held on August 12.

In ward no 29, Mr Goldy, district Youth Congress president, polled 3,381 against Akali Dal candidate Jaskirat, who got 2,598 votes, thus winning by a margin of 783 votes.

In ward no 40, independent candidate Kailash Kaur defeated Akali Dal candidate Surjit Kaur by 766 votes, DM and election officer K F Bannu said.

Of the total 65 MC seats where polling was held on August 8, Congress now has 21, BJP 17, Akali Dal 15, CPI 1 and independents have bagged 11 seats.

The repolling was ordered in two wards due to widespread incidents of violence and rigging.
