BMC to disconnect water, electricity in old buildings
Mumbai, Aug 24 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will disconnect water and electric supply to all the buildings that are 15 years old and fail to submit a structural audit and a stability certificate every five years to the local ward office.
In case of not submitting the relevant certificates, the building owner or the society will be fined Rs 50,000 and given a notice of one month after which the BMC will take the drastic step.
This decision was taken at a meeting held at Mayor Shubha Raul's office today, that was attended by Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak, Opposition Leader Raj Hans Singh and other officials from the corporation.
In the meeting, steps for repairing old buildings on BMC land and shifting of the residents was discussed.
The issue of old and dilapidated buildings on MHADA and private land was discussed.
The administration has taken the strong steps to check the stability of the buildings after Laxmi Chhaya building in Borivali collapsed due to structural changes in the building last month and claimed over 30 lives.
