A close associate of Hemant Poojari gang killed

Mumbai, Aug 24 (UNI) A close associate of Hemant Poojari gang was killed in an encounter with police at Nehru Nagar, Kurla in eastern suburb of the city, late last night.

Acting on a tip-off that Ajay Mohite alias Ajay Nepali would be coming to meet his associates at Nehru Nagar at around 2200 hrs, the police laid a trap. The police asked him to surrender, on his arrival to the site. However, the gangster opened fire on them, the police said.

The police team fired at him in retaliation, in which he suffered chest and head injuries and collapsed on the ground. Mohite was rushed to the government hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.

More than 14 cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion were registered against him. He was convicted in a murder case and was on parole for about seven months.

He was also suspected of being involved in Khabri (informer) Suresh Shetty's murder in Nirmla Nagar police juridication some months ago, the police added.
