Punjab courier to be checked for narcotic smuggling

Patiala, Aug 23 (UNI) Punjab police would take action against the operators of courier services indulging in smuggling of narcotics, Director General of police, NPS Aulakh, said here today.

A special cell had already been made at district headquarters for this purpose, Mr Aulakh said while addressing a media conference here today.

Mr Aulakh said the police had received many complaints regarding some of the courier services indulging in delivery of opium and other drugs.

He said the SSPs were told to prepare a list of courier service agents and surprise raids and checking would be done when they receive the courier load.

Regarding the amendment in Police Act, he said Legal Remembrance of Punjab has raised some objection regarding these and the authorities had given the reply. The matter was now with the State Home Secretary.

Regarding deficiency of police force in new districts, the DG said the department had written to the government to give permission to raise police force from the internal sources.

He further added that about 2000 more cops including one reserve battalion was being trained and will be inducted in the police force in the near future.

Police department had also written to the government for the promotions of 65 DSPs in Punjab.

Eight cases have been registered by Patiala police regarding the violence during the Municipal elections held on August 8, he added.
