Monsoon claims 8 lives in Jharkhand, UP

New Delhi, Aug 23 (UNI) Three members of a family died when lightning struck them at Mangardaha village in Jharkhand while five more people were killed in flood-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh.

Three members of a family including Kamli Devi (45), Rohni Devi (47) and Kaushalya Devi (36) were taking shelter under a tree when lightning struck them at Mangardaha village and killed them on the spot today. Two others were injured in the incident.

The flood toll in Uttar Pradesh rose to 233, as five more died in monsoon-related incidents in Bareilly during past 24 hours.

People in the flood-hit districts of Uttar Pradesh heaved a sigh of relief with dip in water level of prominent rivers including Ganga, Ram Ganga, Ghaghra, Sharda, Kuano and Rapti.

According to Central Water Commission, the turbulent Ghaghra was flowing at the danger mark in Elignbridge, while it was overflowing the red mark by 55 cm and 85 cm respectively in Ayodhya and Turtipar.

Rapti was flowing 10 cm below the danger mark in Birdghat.

Kuano in Chandradeep Ghat was flowing 11 cm below the danger mark, Ramganga in Dabri (Shahjahanpur) was overflowing the red mark by 9 cm.

According to met department, sporadic rainfall was witnessed in some parts of the state.

The Gorakhpur-Sonauli national highway remained affected for the ninth consecutive day.

The flood situation in Bihar improved even as majority of the rivers were still flowing above the danger mark. More than 1.80 crore people have been affected by the floods in 216 blocks of 19 districts damaging standing crops worth Rs 548 crore in the state.

Altogether, 331 people have been killed across the state so far.

Rains lashed Rajasthan for the third consecutive day with south-east monsoon becoming active in the state and Kerela experienced light rains.

In Rajasthan, Jaisalmer recorded a heavy downpour of 70 mm from 0800 hrs to 1200 hrs today, while the state capital recorded 63 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Most water-bodies in the rural areas are full due to good showers this season.

There are reports of house collapse in Ajmer and Bikaner districts. At least 50 houses of Beetnok village in Kolayat tehsil of Bikaner have given away due to extensive rains and more than 70 sheep and goat have perished.

One wall of the Junagarh fort has also come down.

Monsoon rains lashed isolated places in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh since last night, providing respite from hot and humid weather conditions in the region.

In Punjab, heavy rain pounded Nangal Dam site, turning it the wettest place in the state, recording 85.8 mm downpour overnight.

Balachour measured 7.1 mm while Madopur, near Pathankot, registered 5.0 mm rainfall.

Rains also pounded some areas in Haryana with Hisar recording 6.2 mm and Nelokheri 2.5 mm till this morning. Rohtak reported trace rainfall.

Shimla and its adjoining areas were also lashed by rain and the capital town recorded 0.6 mm rainfall overnight. Upper areas of Shimla district, including tourist places of Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda also had rain.

In Kerala, Koilandi received the highest rainfall of three cm followed by Ottappalam and Pattambi -- two cm each.

Kolkata experienced a humid weather with a maximum temperature of 33.8 degree celsius and a minimum of 27 degree celsius.
