Mumbai, Aug 23 (UNI) Taking cognizance of the onion price hike, Maharashtra Government has decided that if the prices do not come down within four days, the Government would sell the same at Rs 12 per kilo.

According to sources, the Government had acted in the similar way in 2005 when onion prices had shot up.

The Government is also considering to request the Centre to make onion as the essential commodity as well as to give the same a minimum support price of five rupees per kg.

Former MLC and Congress leader Kanhaiyalal Gidwani told reporters that this year a lot of onion from Maharashtra were exported as Pakistan could not export to other countries, which has resulted in increase in the prices of the same.

Maharashtra has per annum yield of 16 lakh tonnes and this year it has got sufficient stock to cater till September, when the new onion will hit the market.
