Lok Sabha to discuss Sachar report: Antulay
New Delhi, Aug 23 (UNI) Minority Affairs Minister A R Antualy today informed Lok Sabha that the Sachar Committee report would be discussed during ongoing session of the House, possibly this month.
Replying questions by Mr Hannan Mollah (CPM) and others, he said of the 44 recommendations and 32 suggestions made by the Committee, the UPA government has accepted all 76 except three which, he, however, did not identify.
On the issue of minority institution status to Jamia Millia Islamia, Mr Antulay, while stating he personally favoured it to be a minority institute, said the matter is sub judice before a Commission set up by the Human Resource Develoment ministry.
The Minister disclosed that corpus of Mualana Azad Education Foundation has been raised to Rs 250 crore, assuring it would be doubled in the next two to three years. The government endeavour is to raise the amount to Rs 1,000 crore during the 11th plan, he added.
Mr E Ponnuswamy of PMK sought reservation for minorities, saying doles were not enough for them. He urged political parties not to use them only as vote banks instead of ameliorating their lot.
Rasa Singh Rawat of BJP charged the Congress with having used minorities, including Muslims, as vote banks and doing nothing for their uplifting their educational status in the society.
