Bangalore, Aug 23 (UNI) Policy limitations are acting as stumbling blocks in India making rapid strides in the field of aeronautics, renowned aeronautical scientist Dr Roddam Narasimha said today.

''India's stride in the field of aeronautics is blocked by policy-limited and not technology-limited,'' he said, while speaking on 'Aerospace Development: Retrospect and Prospects' at a conference on 'Science and Technology - Past, Present and Future', organised by the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy.

Dr Narasimha said though India had made early inroads into the sector and made a mark but it failed to remain among the top global players. Despite six decades of experience in the field, flawed or delayed policies in the aviation sector had resulted in the country lagging behind in garnering the benefit it derived due to making early strides. ''India went ahead with designing and research of aircraft even before anything was done on developing bicycles and radios and achieved early success,'' he claimed.

He said Indian Civil Aviation had taken a big lead in the last six decades and the same could be said regarding development of aeronautics. ''Eventhough the country has won accolades for the development of Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, the much advanced Light Combat Aircraft project was still limping.'' The LCA was better than the US-made F16s in all respects, but the former was still struggling to come out of the prototype stage. The other indigenous aircraft projects, HANSA and SARAS, were also struggling to make strides in the sky, despite being hailed as the best in terms of design, development and performance, he added.
