CPCB closed 76 units in 3 years for violating pollution norms

New Delhi, Aug 22 (UNI) The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has during the past three years identified 187 industrial units which are violating the pollution control norms.

As many as 76 of these units were directed to be closed by CPCB under Section 5 of the Environmental(Protection) Act, 1986, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Namo Narayana Meena informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply today.

He said the CPCB also issued directions to State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) for closure of one industrial unit in 2005, one in 2006 and six units in 2007 till installation and satisfactory operation of requisite pollution control system, in order to meet the prescribed norms.

The CPCB regularly monitors the compliance of directions issued to industrial units for controlling pollution. The industrial units against which the directions were issued have been either closed down or have upgraded the pollution control system as per directions issued, said Mr Meena.
