Centre urges Mizoram to set up children's commission
Aizawl, Aug 22 (UNI) The Ministry of Law and Justice has urged Mizoram to set up a Children's Commission in a follow-up to the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act passed by Parliament in 2005.
''The National Commission has been set up and most states have their state commissions. We have taken steps to have state children commission before the end of October after the Centre's directives,'' state officials here said.
However, rights activist Ruatfela Nu apprehended that the commission would be as ''impotent'' as the Women Commission.
The fact that a recent nation-wide study had placed Mizoram second highest in child abuse, next only to Assam, urges the urgency for Children Commission in Mizoram, Ruatfela Nu said.
