Police crack Chemmanur Jewellery mart gold hiest

Bangalore, Aug 21 (UNI) The Karnataka police have succeeded in cracking the sensational Chemmanur Jewellers robbery case involving theft of gold jewellery worth Rs.4.5 crore, the biggest gold heist in the state, with the arrest of a person in Dakshina Kannada district.

In a daring day light operation a gang had struck the jewellery store in the busy Kammanahalli area in the city, early this month, and took away more than 36 kg of gold and Rs 3.5 lakh in cash at gun point after locking the employees in a room, even as they had opened the shop and preparing to receive the customers in the morning.

One Umesh Shetty was nabbed late on Monday night in Moodabidri in Dakshina Kannada district and 2.2 kg of gold was seized from his possession. He had confessed to his involvement in the robbery, Mangalore police said.

Umesh was picked up in connection with developer Subba Reddy's murder and during interrogation revealed his Bangalore connections.

Speaking to newspersons here today City Police Commissioner Neelam Achyuta Rao said the other culprits involved in the case had been identified and expressed confidence that the booty and the others involved in the crime would be arrested in a few day's time.

''We have identified those responsible for the gold heist and know we know their names as well. We will nab them in a few day's time'' he said.

However, sources said that basing on the CCTV images in the shop, police had already arrested six people and recovered ten kgs of gold jewellery.
