No respite from flood in UP; north-west experiences rain

New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) With flood situation showing no signs of improvement and all the prominent rivers flowing above the danger mark level in UP, the toll in the flood-affected areas of the state has gone up to 221 as three more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours.

Rivers, including Ganga, Ramganga, Ghaghra, Sharda and Behgul, in eastern, central and western regions of UP have been in spate, creating problems for the flood-ravaged areas.

Over 2,000 villages in the flood-hit 20 districts, including Basti, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Gonda, Bahraich, Faizabad, Barabanki, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Jyotiba Phulenagar, Pilibhit and Bareilly have been inundated.

Lakhs of hectares of land have been affected due to the flood in the state.

Release of about three lakh cusecs of water from Banbasa dam had worsened the situation in Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri districts.

In Bihar also, deputy chief minister of the state, Sushil Kumar Modi assuring the people of the state, said the rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas were being carried out on a war footing.

The Capital was warm and humid with the mercury rising to 35.6 Degree Celsius, two degrees above normal.

The maximum temperature rose here from 35.4 Degree Celsius yesterday to 35.6 Degree C today.

The minimum also increased sharply to 27.5 Degree C, from 25.6 Degree C yesterday.

Rains today lashed parts of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, resulting a fall in the temperature especially in the hilly state.

The sky remained partially cloudy at most of the places, as the Sun played hide and seek during the day.

Several areas in Haryana, including Rohtak and Hissar, were lashed by rain overnight. Narnaul was the wettest place in the state, recording 75.0 mm downpour till this morning.

Isolated places in Punjab also received downpour with Ranjit Sagar Dam site measuring 10.0 mm rain till 0830 hours. Shahpur Kandi and Madopur, near Pathankot, registered 2.0 mm rainfall each.

Parts of Himachal Pradesh, including mid and lower hills, were also lashed by rain, dipping the temperature in the state. Tribal areas of the state also reeled under cold-weather conditions following decline in the mercury.Dhundi was the wettest place in the state, recording 35.2 mm of rainfall. Sundernagar, Bhuntar, Pandoh, Rampur, Sujanpur Tira,Nagrota Surian, Kahu, Kasol and Kalpa also experienced downpour.

Rains also lashed Shimla and its adjoining areas and the capital town recorded 9.5 mm rain overnight.

Humid weather conditions prevailed in Chandigarh and its adjoining areas. The city experienced partially cloudy weather during the day.

The southwest monsoon has been active in west and east Madhya Pradesh and coastal Karnataka and subdued over west Rajasthan.

Heavy to very heavy rains occurred at most places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. They have also occurred at most places in coastal Karnataka and at many places in Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, east Madhya Pradesh and at a few places in south interior Karnataka.

Some light rains occurred at isolated places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, Uttaranchal, Jammu and Kashmir.

Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Konkan and Goa, Lakshadweep and at many places in Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and at a few places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Vidarbha, Gujarat Region, Marathwada, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and at isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya, Saurashtra and Kutch, Madhya Maharashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and north interior Karnataka.
