NE states to popularise e-taxation
Agartala, Aug 21: The Centre has suggested that the northeast should popularise e-taxation to promote e-governance initiative in the region.
Official sources here today said that the Centre has undertaken several projects for e-governance and the Income-tax Department has set up a Regional Computer Centre at Shillong to facilitate the direct tax payers of the region.
''As far as indirect taxes are concerned, it has provided the facility of electronic filing of monthly or quarterly excise returns, through ER-1, ER-2. ER-3 under Central Excise Rules, 2002 and dealers return prescribed under sub-rule (6) of rule 7 of the CENVAT Credit Rules, 2002 to all manufacturers of excisable goods,'' officials said.
It made the facility to file excise returns electronically is optional and available to all assesses while e-payment of excise duty became operational in 2005 to all assesses. However, it has now been made mandatory for major assesses that is, those paying annual duty of more than Rs 50 lakh from April 2007 in Central Excise, official added.
