PMK terms delimitation 'politically incorrect'
Tiruchirapalli, Aug 20 (UNI) Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) President G K Mani today urged the Election Commission to stop delimitation drill immediately as it is ''politically and geographically incorrect''.
Talking to reporters after inspecting the venue of the party, where ''Right to Live'' zonal conference is to be held here on August 25, Mr Mani said ''it was unfair on the part of the Commission to carry out delimitation on the basis of the 2001 Census. The process should be done after the 2011 Census. The Commission should maintain status quo till then.'' The delimitation should be done in such a way that one Lok Sabha constituency has atleast one reserved assembly constituency, to ensure the upliftment of the Dalit and other suppressed communities.
The party was seeking legal help on challenging the drill, he added.
Stating that zonal conferences were already conducted at Erode, Nagapattinam and Tirunelveli, he said the city would host the fourth one, as the three zonal conferences had evoked good response.
About the proposed expansion of the Tiruchirapalli International Airport, he said the district administration was trying to demolish hundreds of houses for the project, though it could come up in the non-resident areas.
He urged the Tamil Nadu Government and the Airport Authority of India to choose non-resident areas for expansion works.
Denying reports of confrontation with the ruling DMK in the state, he said ''the PMK had just put forward some demands to protect the interests of the people.'' UNI
