Par panel to solve N-deal impasse: NDA
New Delhi, Aug 20: Rejecting the mechanism evolved by the Left parties and the UPA to address the apprehensions about the Indo-US nuclear deal, the NDA today demanded that any such mechanism should involve a Parliamentary panel comprising of all parties.
A meeting of the NDA leaders, which took place at Leader of Opposition L K Advani's chamber to finalise the Opposition's strategy in Parliament, said the Indo-US nuclear deal concerned the security and foreign policy of India and was not a ''family affair'' between the UPA and the Left. ''If there has to be any mechanism, it must involve Parliament,'' senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra told newspersons after the meeting.
He said the BJP would press for a debate in Parliament under rule 184 entailing a vote after the issue was discussed. When reminded that Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee had already allowed discussion under a rule which did not allow it, Mr Malhotra said the Opposition would file another notice reiterating their demand.
He said the NDA would raise the issue of ''saving Italian fugitive and Bofors accused Ottavio Quattrocchi from the long arm of law be it through CBI inaction or through the intervention of a Cabinet Minister whose responsibility was to protect the interests of the country''.
The NDA had also decided to raise the issue of injustice to farmers not only due to government policies but because of denial of a fair return for their produce. The controversial wheat and pulse imports allowed by the government ''reek of a scandal'.
The BJP had organised a massive protest at Ramlila Grounds today where senior leaders would be addressing the rally.
He said the BJP wanted the famers to get loans at four per cent as followed in some NDA-ruled states.
