Lack of storage and transport hinder farmers: study
Mumbai, Aug 20 (UNI) Lack of cold storage facilities and transportation are the biggest factors in impeding the growth of the farming industry in the country, a study by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) has indicated.
The study revealed that almost 40 per cent of products are wasted due to lack of basic infrastructure and due to the presence of several layers of intermediaries, who do not add any value to the product and hence the cost of the final product increases significantly.
The study also provides suggestions for improving the status by implementing a simplified tax-system, increasing the number of cold storages, reducing the number of middle-men and involving the private sector.
In order to perk up the growth rate to 4 per cent in organised retailing, the Government needs to invest to the tune of Rs 3,00,000 crore, stated a release today.
