KSRTC to use ethanol-blended diesel to reduce pollution

Mysore, Aug 20 (UNI) Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Chief Environmental Officer Ananda Rao today said the State Government had approved blending of 60 lakh litre of ethanol with diesel for use as fuel in KSRTC vehicles.

Speaking at a function here, he said the ethanol blended diesel would be introduced in 20 KSRTC depots in the state.

The move would reduce carbon emission and control the environmental pollution in the state.

He claimed that the KSRTC was the first public transport corporation in Southeast Asia to introduce such a system to save the environment.

The KSRTC, the third largest public transportation organisation in the country, runs 17,500 buses and consumes 40 crore litre of fuel per year.

The KSRTC also uses solar energy for pumping fuel and lighting in some depots in the state.

He said these systems were introduced under Clean Development Management (CDM), keeping in view the rising global temperature.
