Indo-US workshop to promote wholesale markets for fresh produce

New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) The National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM) will hold a two-day workshop for stakeholders interested in promoting wholesale markets for fresh produce at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research here from August 22, 2007.

The workshop, being sponsored by the United States under the US-India Agricultural Knowledge Initiative, will bring together the public and private sectors and is aimed at developing wholesale markets for agricultural products, known as terminal markets.

Farmers' organisations and financers will learn from the US experience and discuss the critical elements necessary to connect farmers with the food processing industries, retail chains and emerging global markets, a US Embassy release said here today.

Department of Agriculture and Cooperation Secretary P K Mishra will delivery the key address. Other speakers include Mr Anurag Bhatnagar of the NIAM and US government officials.

The Agricultural Knowledge Initiative was announced by President George Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July 2005 to revitalize agricultural collaboration between the two countries.
