Army deployed to tackle flood situation

Midnapur, Aug 20 (UNI) The Army swung into action in Ghatal, Keshpur and Kharagpur blocks of West Midnapure district today following the alarming flood situation.

District Magistrate B P Barat here said incessant torrents for the past three days coupled with release of water from the Kansaboti and DVC barrage had affected more than two lakh people in the district.

Army were working on war footing to rescue the marooned people from remote areas of the three flood-battered blocks.

The Army had rescued more than 800 people, he said adding 200 relief camps had been opened in this district.

So far four people had lost their lives in the flood-related incidents in this district, he informed.

All the major rivers in the district like the Kansaboti, Silaboti, Jhumi, Tamal and Parang were flowing over the danger level, he said adding transport services with Ghatal had been completely suspended for the past three days.
