8th Sectoral Summit of NEC Begins in Capital

New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) The Eighth Sectoral Summit of the North East Council began here today with a focus on issues pertaining to Education, Sports and Art and Culture in the Northeastern region.

The Human Resource Development Ministry representatives made various presentations on policies and programmes in the northeast region related to education like the 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan' and the National Literacy Mission.

Projects and Programmes related to Sports and Youth Affairs were also discussed today with representaives of the Ministry making presentations on various programmes being implemented in the northeastern regios.

The representatives of the northeastern States brought out their perspectives and progress and the need for further development in the area of sports and youth affairs.

The Summit is being attended by Manipur GOvernor SS Sidhu, Arunchal Pradesh Governor SK Singh, Mehgalaya Governor BL Joshi, Assam Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Ajay Singh, Tripura Governor DN Sahaya, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, DoNER Secretary Sushma Singh, and Secretary NEC Falguni Rajkumar besides senior State Government officials from the Northeast, among others.

Minister for Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs&Sports and DoNER Mani Shankar Aiyar is chairing the Summit.

There will be presentations and discussions on Art and Culture on day two of the Summit tomorrow.
