L S Speaker consults political parties on enforcing discipline

New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has convened a meeting of the leaders of political parties for discussing the ways of ensuring smooth running of the House on August 23.

Sources said the Speaker would want the parties to suggest the ways to enforce discipline in the House. Without such a method, the Presiding Officer has to stick to the rule book and name the member violating the rules.

The Speaker is wanting the political parties to consider delegating the power to the senior most member in the Table Office to provide the name of the errant member violating the rules of the House instead of leaving this task to the Speaker himself to save the image of the highest democratic institution, the sources said.
