Flood death toll touches 210 mark in UP

New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) With all the major rivers of UP flowing above the danger mark level, the death toll in the flood-related incidents of the state has gone up to 210.

Due to release of 90,000 cusec water in Ganga at Haridwar, a red alert had been sounded in several villages of Jyotiba Phulenagar.

Standing crop in three lakh acres in more than 2,500 villages had been destroyed in Basti, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Sravasti, Faizabad, Barabanki, Sitapur, Farrukhabad, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Badaun and Jyotiba Phulenagar districts.

A report from Bareilly said due to incessant downpour in the hilly areas and also release of thousands of cusecs water from Uttarakhand, Sharda and Ramganga have started playing havoc in Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri and Rampur respectively.

In Punjab, during the past 24 hours, many parts of the state were lashed by rains with Nangal Dam region witnessing 29.2 mm, Ranjit Sagar dam 45 mm and Shahpur Kandi 58.2 mm, of rainfall.

Karnal in Haryana witnessed 32.2 mm, Nilokadi 15.4 mm and Ambala 3.4 mm of rainfall.

People in Chandigarh, enjoyed a pleasant day with intermittent rains and cloudy sky providing a respite from yesterday's blazing Sun.

In Himachal Pradesh, most places were lashed by rains. Shimla recorded a rainfall of 6.7 mm, Una 39 mm, Sujanpur Tira 27.6 mm, Kasaul 11 mm and Guler 10.4 mm.

In Jammu and Kashmir, 42 mm rainfall was recorded at Basauli while in Patti it was 46.4 mm and in Bhund 4.8 mm.

Mumbai and its suburbs in Maharashtra were also lashed by rains after a brief lull.

The south-west monsoon has been active in Orissa, while it has subdued over Punjab, Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, Kutch, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.

Heavy rains have occurred at most places in Gangetic West Bengal, and at many places in Orissa, Jharkhand, Konkan and Goa. They have occurred at a few places in Gujarat Region and at isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra.

In Bihar, after incessant rainfall for weeks, Patna today heaved a sigh of relief with the weather improving.

The local Met office said maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 26.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum relative humidity was pegged at 70 per cent.

Incessant rain continued to affect normal life in many parts of Bengal as weathermen predicted more rains in next 24 hours in the state.

The country's capital too witnessed some light rains this morning, giving the people respite from the heat and humidity.

The maximum temperature came down to 31.4 Celsius in New Delhi, five degrees lower than yesterday's 36.6. The minimum also fell two degrees to 25.7.
