Cavuery bunds to be reinforced with NABARD's help: Minister

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 19 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government will implement a Rs 210 crore project for strengthening the bunds of River Cauvery in the delta districts, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin said today.

Speaking to newsmen here after inspecting the work on underground drainage scheme being carried out in the left out areas of Tiruchirapalli City Corporation, Mr Stalin said the project will be implemented with financial assistance from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had already sanctioned Rs 31.5 crore for implementing the first phase of the flood prevention scheme in Korayar and Kudamurutti River Areas in and around Tiruchirapalli.

The second phase of this project would be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 47.5 crore. Once this was completed, residents of Tiruchirapalli and suburbs will experience relief from flood threat from these rivers.

He said the Rs 99-crore drinking water supply improvement scheme was being implemented in the corporation areas.

The ongoing underground drainage scheme was expected to be completed by October this year, he added.
