Shillong, Aug 18: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said in order to reverse the trend of students having the state for higher studies, the government had taken steps to open self-financed universities in the state.

Inaugurating the Tura campus of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) at Tura yesterday, Dr Sangma lauded the joint efforts and hard work put in by the state government and the stakeholders to get a legislation passed in the Assembly to open universities in Meghalaya.

He assured MLCU officials that no stone would be left unturned in providing help and support to make the university one of the leading universities in the country.

Local MLA Billykid appealed to the faculty and students to take the university to the greatest heights and assured all possible help.

Highlighting the vision of the university, Vice Chancellor Dr Glenn C Kharkongor said the Tura campus would be developed into a full-fledged campus offering various other undergraduate degrees, research programmes and development projects.
