Law and Order and Investigation Wings to be separated: ADGP

Phagwara, Aug 18 (UNI) Law and Order and Investigation Wings would soon be seperated in Punjab Police to increase the efficiency of both wings, ADGP Punjab Chander Shekher said here today.

Mr Shekhar told UNI that an SP(D) would be deputed to whom the investigation wing would be made accountable.

When asked about a spurt in letters received recently which threatened of triggering blasts at several important, sensitive and religious places, the ADGP said, though all letters were anonymous, still police could not take any chances and security was beefed up.

Also, now more serious efforts will be made to trace the source of such threats and strict action taken against mischief makers, he said adding that law and order situation was satisfactory in the state and peace would be maintained at every cost.

Reacting to allegations of the opposition parties that police had allegedly misused its authority at some places during Municipal Corporation elections, Mr Shekher said that there were only a few complaints and officers concerned had been asked to take stern action in this regard.

Commenting on the rising incidents of crime related with Drugs and Norcatics Smuggling, fake currency rackets, fake travel agents and human trafficking in the region, the ADGP said that these crimes posed a complex challenge because of the link of the criminals in neighbouring nations like Pakistan and Afganistan.

''However, the Punjab Police was examining the issue minutely and was determined to prevent all adverse effects arising out of complicated situation in both these countries,'' he said.

He also said that the police force was being modernised and computerisation was being undertaken.

Ultramodern "Tazer Guns", were being provided to each district of the state. These guns with rubber bullets would not cause major injury and could be extremely helpful in chasing criminals in crowded areas and controlling mobs.
