EME Cyclists Set Kashmir-to-Kanniyakumari Record

New Delhi, Aug 18 (UNI) Cyclist from the Indian Army's Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME) have set a new record in traversing the distance between Leh (Ladakh) in the northern Indian state of Jammu&Kashmir and Kanniyakumari, the southern tip of the country.

Flagged off on July 30 last from Leh at 0530 hrs, the fifteen-member team reached Kanniyakumari at 2330 hrs last night -- thus completing the north-south journey in an admirable 18 days, 17 hours and 45 minutes.

The earlier record -- as available in the Limca Book of Records -- stands in the name of Mr Hari Shankar Yadav of Lucknow who covered the same distance in 19 days 21 hrs and 30 minutes during October-November 2005.

The Army team improved upon Mr Yadav's timing by one day three hrs and 45 minutes.

On reaching Kanniyakumari, the team was given a rousing welcome by the town populace.

Lt Gen Arvind Mahajan, EME Director General, was present on the occasion.
