RS adjourned till Monday following uproar on Fernandes' statement
New Delhi, Aug 17 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till Monday as Congress members agitated over media reports attributed to NDA Convenor George Fernandes charging Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with 'betraying' Parliament over Indo-US nuclear deal, demanded his arrest and stalled the proceedings of the House forcing its adjournment twice today.
As soon as the House reassembled at 1430 hrs, Congress members raised slogans demanding arrest of Mr Fernandes for reportedly making a statement here saying, ''If it were China, they would have settled it with one bullet in his head.'' Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri said that since Prime Minister was a respected member of the Rajya Sabha, even the opposition should condemn such a statement against Dr Singh.
On the direction of Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan, Leader of the Opposition Jaswant Singh stood up to make a statement on the issue, but due to the uproar created by the treasury benches, nothing could be heard in the din.
Despite repeated efforts, Mr Khan failed to contain the uproar of the agitated members and he adjourned the House till Monday 1100 hrs.
