Nearly 300 cases of bank frauds in 2006-07

New Delhi, Aug 17 (UNI) As many as 297 cases of bank fraud involving more than Rs 13 crore were reported during 2006-07, Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal informed the Lok Sabha today.

Rs 9.27 crore were withdrawn through fake cheques and demand drafts from public sector banks in 178 cases, Mr Bansal said in a written reply.

During the same period, Rs 2.15 crore were fraudulently withdrawn from private sector banks in 62 cases and Rs 1.91 crore from foreign banks in 57 cases.

X X X SICK INDUSTRIES: A total of 35 industries were declared were declared sick in 2006 comparted to 66 in 2005 and 162 in 2004, Mr Bansal said.

X X X NRIs: Rs 1,22,243 crore was total outstanding deposits of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) with public sector banks as on last reporting Friday of March 2007.

The respective figures for 2006 and 2005 were Rs 1,14,831 crore and Rs 1,06,942 crore, the Minister said.
