BJP accuses UPA for disruptions in RS
New Delhi, Aug 17: The BJP today blamed the ruling alliance of deliberately disrupting proceedings in the Rajya Sabha to avoid a discussion on the status of the Sachar Committee Report.
Describing the attitude of the UPA members as ''highly objectionable,'' BJP Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the frequent adjournments caused by the members of the treasury benches on NDA convener George Fernandes remarks about Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had deprived the Leader of the Opposition Jaswant Singh from speaking on the 123 Agreement with United States and a discussion on the implementation of the Sachar Committee report.
She alleged that the Government did not want a discussion on the Sachar Committee report and had approached the member whose resolution on the Committee's report was to be taken up at 1430 hours. ''The member was suggested that he should remain absent so that the next private member's resolution on agenda could be taken up,'' she claimed.
Since the member rejected the offer, the members from the treasury benches disrupted the proceedings of the house, she charged.
Mrs Swaraj said that at a meeting with the Chairman in the morning, leaders of various political parties had agreed that the Leader of the Opposition would be allowed to express his concern over the Indo-US Nuclear Deal. But the manner in which the Congress members and others raked up Mr Fernandes' issue was totally uncalled for. She said it had surprised the Chairman as he had called the name of the Leader of the Opposition to raise the issue as soon as the Question Hour was over.
There were four other issues to be raised by other members as decided in the meeting with the Chairman, she said.
Mrs Swaraj said Mr Fernandes was not a member of Rajya Sabha and therefore as per convention the issue concerning the member of other House was not allowed to be raised.
