NPP opposes decision to maintain status quo of Assembly constituenci
Imphal, Aug 16 (UNI) The Naga National Party (NPP) president Ng Hungyo has requested the Chairman of the Delimitation Commission of India to start the delimitation process in Manipur.
His request came in the backdrop of Manipur governmment's objection against the delimitation process after a report, of ''abnormal growth'' of population in some areas of the state and a ''defective'' census of 2001, came into force.
The State Cabinet and the Manipur Assembly had decided to oppose the delimitation process until those two points were clarified.
An All Party Delegation from Manipur had also recently urged the Commission, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to maintain the status quo until fresh census was taken.
The State government has also formed a committee to look into the matter and place a report.
However, the NPP president in a memorandum to the Commission said the abnormal growth should not be considered as wrong. The decision of the political parties and the Assembly was against the interest of the tribal people, he said.
