New variety of coconut tree developed
Alappuzha, Kerala, Aug 16 (UNI) The Coconut Research Centre at Kayamkulam has developed a particular genus of coconut tree which is able to resist virus infection.
Researchers said the genus called Elite Coconut, which is local and traditional but very rare, can resist diseases for a long time.
The researchers took seeds of country genus from trees older than 20 years to develop the new variety. The team undertook a stringent and wide survey to find out the parental trees. The genus was confined to Onattukara, near Kayamkulam.
They then keenly and closely observed the quality and resistance power of the parental tree to infection. The period from January to April was used to collect the seeds.
Mature seeds were taken and planted within a distance of 30 cms in a place where fresh air was available. The unhealthy and late germinating plants were removed. Plantain trees were used to shield the germinated plants.
Researchers claim the healthy plants were well suited for Kerala's climate.
A fast growing coconut tree is a boon for farmers, they said adding one of the peculiarities of Elite Coconut Plant was its long and wide leaves.
