Japanese Encephalitis toll claims 68 lives this season

Gorakhpur, Aug 16 (UNI) The killer vector-borne menace Japanese Encephalitis (JE) toll in Eastern Uttar Pradesh mounted to 68 with the death of three more children in the last 24 hours.

Last year, JE had claimed over 1,000 lives in UP alone.

Talking to UNI here today, Additional Director, Medical Health and Family Welfare Dr L P Rawat said the inflow of JE patients continued unabated at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College here.

Since January this year, a total of more than 392 people sufferring from fatal JE had been admitted to the medical college, of which 68, including six from Nepal, succumbed.

Almost 67 patients, including 9 fresh cases, are still in remission at the hospital.

The patients belong to Gorakhpur, Deoria, Maharajganj, Sant Kabirnagar, Kushinagar, Ballia, Bahraich, Mau, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Azamgarh, Gonda and Balrampur districts of UP.

A total of 40 cases also pertain to the adjoining districts of Bihar.

The endemic afflicts eastern UP during monsoon every year and continues to take people under its jaws till the onset of winters.
