India marks 60th anniversary of Independence
New Delhi, Aug 15: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, speaking on the 60th anniversary of independence from British rule today, said the country needed to work harder to fight poverty, ignorance and disease despite fast economic growth. Singh also announced a slew of measures to improve the farming sector. He said that the central government would invest 250 billion rupees in agriculture to increase food production and lift the livelihood of millions farmers burdened by debts.
