BJP,TDP agitate against renaming of KPHB colony
Hyderabad, Aug 16 (UNI) A large number of TDP and BJP activists today staged a dharna, blocking the traffic on the Kukatpalli Housing Board (KPHB) road, protesting the government's decision to rename KPHB colony as 'KPHB Rajiv Gandhi colony' on the outskirts of the city.
BJP State Secretary Bhim Rao, who led the agitation, said the KPHB colony was the Asia's biggest colony and the people residing there for more than 25 years did not want its name to be changed.
He reminded that when the erstwhile TDP government had tried to change its name to 'Tarakarana Colony', his party had protested and the Congress too joined the agitation.
''Now also, the BJP is spearheading the agitation, and the TDP had joined it on its own,'' he claimed.
Agitators raising slogans against the Rajasekhara Reddy government, sat on the road disrupting the traffic. Police cleared the traffic after arresting the agitators who were later released.
The two parties had called for a bandh today in the colony.
Earlier in the day, Andhra Pradesh Governor Rameshwar Thakur had unveiled a Rajiv Gandhi statue there.
